Strasbourg, Sept 10 \u2013 Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced on Wednesday that the European Commission will propose a new method to limit steel imports <\/a>from foreign competitors in order to protect domestic producers.<\/p>\n

Von der Leyen told the European Parliament: \u201cGlobal overcapacity<\/a> has pressured profit margins and provides little incentive for paying a clean premium. This makes it harder for the European steel industry to invest in reducing carbon emissions.\u201d<\/p>\n

In her annual State of the Union speech, she added: \u201cFor this reason, the Commission will propose a new and long-term trade tool to replace the steel safeguard measures that are expiring.\u201d<\/p>\n

The bloc cannot extend existing steel safeguard measures beyond mid-2026 under World Trade Organization rules. The Commission had previously stated that it would propose new measures by the end of Q3 this year<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
