Sharp Decline in U.S. Steel Imports in 2025
According to final data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported that total steel imports into the United States for the full year 2025 reached 25,241,000 net tons (approximately 22.9 million metric tons). Finished steel imports totaled 18,665,000 net tons (approximately 16.9 million metric tons).
These figures indicate a 12.6% year-over-year decline in total steel imports and a 17.1% decrease in finished steel imports compared to 2024.
In December 2025, finished steel accounted for approximately 14% of total U.S. steel consumption, while for the full year 2025, its share stood at 18%.
In 2025, Canada was the largest steel supplier to the U.S. market, delivering approximately 4.1 million metric tons. It was followed by Brazil (3.7 million metric tons), Mexico (2.6 million metric tons), South Korea (2.4 million metric tons), and Germany (around 1.0 million metric tons).
