According to Steel Data: China and India Steel Production 2025
China’s steel production has been on a downward trend since 2021. Compared to the period from January to July 2020, China’s crude steel production decreased by 8.5 percent, equivalent to 55 million tons, falling from 649 million tons to 594 million tons.
In contrast, India has experienced strong growth in production since 2020. India’s crude steel production in the period from January to July 2025 increased by 79 percent, equivalent to 42 million tons, rising from 53 million tons to 95 million tons compared to the same period in 2020.
India’s significant production growth is driven by healthy and sustained increases in domestic steel consumption. By examining China and India steel production in 2025, it is evident that since domestic demand supports production growth, India—unlike in previous years—does not have a strong presence in export markets, and the majority of excess production is allocated to domestic consumption.
