Serious and fatal accidents remain one of the key challenges in the global steel industry. The World Steel Association is working to transform safety culture in plants by introducing four key principles:
1- Changing Organizational Mindset:
Safety means the ability to “fail safely,” not just the absence of incidents. Instead of focusing on human error, systems must be examined.
2- Organizational Leadership Training:
Leaders must learn how to respond to mistakes, create a safe space for dialogue, and balance safety with productivity.
3- Active Learning through Employee Involvement:
By forming “learning teams” and designing safety with worker participation, accidents can be reduced.
4- Strengthening Organizational Capabilities:
Rather than focusing on errors, we should identify and enhance positive capacities.
📌 Key Actions:
✅ Psychological safety training for managers
✅ Safety design with production staff participation
✅ Measuring the effectiveness of controls
✅ Forming learning teams
✅ Managing safety and productivity simultaneously
✅ To reduce accidents, we must move away from traditional perspectives and recognize safety as a human, collaborative, and learnable concept.
