Arabian Gulf Steel Industries (AGSI) says rebar produced at its Abu Dhabi facility has a cradle-to-gate carbon footprint of 139 kg of CO₂ equivalent per tonne, documented in an Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) independently verified by CARES UK. The company also reported 218 kg CO₂e/t for rebar from its Sharjah operations. The figures were announced on 13 October 2026.
According to Steel World Review, the announcement is notable because it provides product- and site-specific data rather than a broad corporate target. AGSI says the rebar is made using locally recycled scrap in a fully electrified production process. The declared boundary runs from raw materials to the factory gate, so it should not be read as a full-life-cycle footprint covering later transport, construction, use or end-of-life stages.
The significance of this development goes beyond a single low figure. Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) can help manufacturers, contractors, and project owners assess the carbon footprint of construction materials using clearly defined methodologies and system boundaries. CARES also explains that, for a valid comparison, products must be assessed using consistent rules, measurement methods, and production boundaries; otherwise, comparing the figures side by side may be misleading.
Verified EPDs can help construction buyers assess the embodied carbon of materials. CARES notes that comparisons are meaningful only when products are assessed using consistent rules, methods and production boundaries. The figure may therefore be relevant to procurement discussions, but it is not automatically equivalent to an emissions value calculated under the EU’s CBAM rules.
