Introduction to Startup Companies in the Steel Industry

Limelight Steel, founded in 2021 in the United States has introduced an innovative, carbon-free process for producing iron from iron ore using laser technology. This technology is based on the use of semiconductor lasers (laser diodes) as an electric industrial heat source, enabling iron ore reduction with significant energy savings.

Laser Furnace

At the heart of this technology is an advanced furnace in which an array of laser diodes is projected over a large surface of iron ore. This thermal system can reach extremely high temperatures and, through thermal decomposition of iron ore, produces metallic iron and oxygen. Unlike conventional processes, this method eliminates the need for chemical reductants such as hydrogen, reducing operational costs and complexity.

Key Advantages of Laser Technology

  1. Elimination of Chemical Reductants:
    The thermal decomposition process in the laser furnace removes the need for reducing agents such as hydrogen, increasing energy efficiency and simplifying the production process.
  2. Utilization of Low-Grade Iron Ore:
    Unlike hydrogen-based furnaces that can only use high-grade iron ore (approximately 3% of global reserves), Limelight’s technology enables the use of low-grade iron ore and separates molten iron from impurities. This capability allows for 97% of global iron ore resources to be used in production.
  3. Energy Savings:
    The iron ore reduction process in this technology offers up to 20% energy savings compared to conventional methods.

Limelight’s laser technology is integrated into an optimized supply chain that includes the following stages:

  1. Iron ore extraction
  2. Processing in a proprietary laser furnace
  3. Transfer of produced iron to steelmakers
  4. Distribution of steel products to end users

The laser technology of Limelight Steel represents a transformative step toward green steelmaking. By eliminating greenhouse gases, increasing energy efficiency, and enabling the use of diverse iron ore resources, this technology could open new horizons in the steel industry and play a vital role in sustainable development and industrial self-sufficiency, especially in the United States.
