Strasbourg, Sept 10 – Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, announced on Wednesday that the European Commission will propose a new method to limit steel imports from foreign competitors in order to protect domestic producers.
Von der Leyen told the European Parliament: “Global overcapacity has pressured profit margins and provides little incentive for paying a clean premium. This makes it harder for the European steel industry to invest in reducing carbon emissions.”
In her annual State of the Union speech, she added: “For this reason, the Commission will propose a new and long-term trade tool to replace the steel safeguard measures that are expiring.”
The bloc cannot extend existing steel safeguard measures beyond mid-2026 under World Trade Organization rules. The Commission had previously stated that it would propose new measures by the end of Q3 this year
