ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih, the company’s steelmaking operation in Ukraine, has been struck by missile attacks twice within five weeks. Following the second attack, primary steel production at the plant has been halted.
In the first attack, which took place in mid-August, 13 employees and contractors were injured, while two people, including one company employee and one employee of a contractor organization, were killed. At the time of the attack, the plant was operational. However, the main energy and blast furnace production facilities were damaged, and some production processes were partially halted.
Following the incident, specialist teams began assessing the extent of the damage and the possibilities and timing for restoring operations.
Steel World Review reports that the second missile attack took place on Saturday, when a ballistic missile again struck ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih. Two contractors were killed and two employees were injured in the attack. According to ArcelorMittal, the strike focused on the area of Ironmaking Complex No. 1.
Specialist teams are currently assessing the extent of the damage and the work required to resume operations. The company said it is too early to provide a credible estimate of how long the repair work will take.
According to ArcelorMittal, this was the second missile strike on its ArcelorMittal Kryvyi Rih operations in five weeks. Following the second attack, primary steel production has been halted, while the rest of the plant’s facilities are either being idled or operating at minimum levels.
The company also said its current focus is on supporting the families and loved ones of those killed, as well as providing support to employees affected by the attacks. Those injured are receiving medical attention at local hospitals.
